Headlights catch a woman flagging a passing car at 3 a.m., blood on her and her phone dead. She tells the driver that another man gave her a ride, turned aggressive and would not take no, so she ran. She refuses to go to the police and says they cannot help. The driver is a married man helping someone he has never met, and he wants her safe. She asks him to protect her until daylight and agrees to a motel up the road.

Episode 1: A stranger at three
The driver stops for a bleeding woman on an empty road and lets her in. She describes the earlier ride that turned bad and refuses his offer of a police station. Saying he makes her feel safe, she asks him to keep watch until morning. He suggests a motel and promises to stay.

At the motel desk the clerk leers and asks how many beds; the driver insists on two. In the room he vows that anything coming for her will have to get past him. She tells him he smells of road and something warm underneath. He admits he is married and inexperienced, and she dismisses vows as something for people who expect to die.
