The King's Chambermaid

A dropped ring earns a servant a curse from a royal official on the first morning of the Harvest Court, a festival that keeps the king in public view for seven days. His wife the queen has sent the woman from the kitchens to dress him. The king rules a castle full of courtiers and listening ears, and his marriage is a political arrangement with no warmth left. The servant has observed him from her post in the kitchens for twelve months. She wants more than a single night with him.

1. EP 1

   Episode 1: The ring and the official

   The servant arrives to dress the king and lingers over the task. When she fumbles his ring, an official moves to punish her, and the king threatens to take the man's hand. The queen calls him to court and he lets it wait. Before leaving he asks how to see the servant again, and she answers that his bed is hers to prepare at midnight.

2. EP 2

   Episode 2: A locked bedchamber

   The servant finds the king already waiting at midnight. She says she has studied him from below stairs for a year, since he alone thanks a servant. He warns her she could hang, and she asks him to make it worth the risk. When the queen knocks to come to bed, he keeps the door locked and has the message given that he sleeps alone.

   Episode 3 to 5

   The queen now knows a door was locked against her, and six days of the Harvest Court remain. What she does with that knowledge is the thread the later episodes carry.
