Episode by episode

A plaster cast on one leg keeps the stepmother off her feet just as her husband packs for a two-week trip. Her stepson, a grown man living in the house, gets the job of looking after her. She cannot reach a zipper, a clasp or a high shelf, and a doctor's visit means getting dressed properly. The father leaves thanking his son and promising to call from the road. She wants company and touch, and the stepson wants to be useful without letting the arrangement drift.

Episode 1: The zipper before the appointment
The father says goodbye, uneasy about leaving, and hands his wife over to his son's care. Alone with her, the stepson offers to do whatever she needs, and she warns him that such an offer is risky to make. He zips her dress for the appointment. She tells him that tonight the dress, and what is under it, comes off with his help.

The undressing happens at night, and she asks him to go slower. The father phones while she is getting ready for bed, and she assures him over the line that his son is helping.
