Episode by episode

A law read aloud to every new guard opens the story: a guard whose hand meets the royal skin is put to death. Kale came from the stables, and the rest of the guard expects him back there by nightfall. The queen picks him anyway, the one nobody wanted, to stand outside her bedchamber. She chose him because he looks back at her when she looks at him. Kale hopes to survive with his post intact. The queen wants what the law cannot stop her from taking.

    Episode 1: The one nobody wanted

    The guard captain mocks Kale's origins. The queen asks his name and assigns him to her bedchamber starting that night. Alone, she explains her choice and points out that the law limits his hands, not hers. She notes how hard his heart is pounding, and he blames the post. She tells him that tonight he belongs to her.

    Episode 2: Holding the crown

    At her command he bars the entrance and takes the royal circlet in both palms, where letting it fall would be treason. She has him recite the rule against touching her, then touches him while he stands still. She explains that the law protects him from her, not the reverse. Before he can protest further, she reveals that the court picks her husband tomorrow.
