A guest list of forty names lies on the table as the stepdaughter plans her mother's fiftieth birthday for Saturday. Her stepfather married her mother three years ago and has never been asked for much. He is to keep his wife busy elsewhere while guests arrive. The stepdaughter, an adult with her own apartment, has also reached Aunt Sarah, a stepsister of her mother, silent toward her for four years. She has her own reasons for staying the week.
