A tackle box goes out to the truck as the father heads off for a fishing weekend, telling his wife not to let the son spend the whole time with his books. The son is a grown man, home for two days. His stepmother, Riley, is much closer to his age than to his father's. She finds her marriage dull, since her husband scorns movies and most other pleasures she likes. She has noticed the son for a while. He has never let himself notice her.

    Once the truck pulls away, Riley asks about his love life and seems pleased that he has nobody. She catches him looking and, rather than scolding him, tells him she likes it, adding that his father never looks at her that way. She proposes a movie that evening. By the end he begins to wonder exactly what she wants.
