A game controller set down mid-campaign is all the warning the stepson gets before Amanda hands him his father's suit. Her husband has phoned to say the office is keeping him, and she will not enter her own gala unescorted. The stepson is an adult and would rather finish his game. Amanda wants a convincing escort for the evening. Her husband has also left behind a hotel room booked for two, which now has nobody in it but her.
