Kate wants proof of a good marriage, Dan wants a quiet night, and Margot wants to test how firm his refusal is with nobody listening.

    Margot follows Dan into the kitchen while he makes Kate's coffee and asks if he would ever take her up on it. He answers no at once, and she reads his racing pulse as a different answer. Kate calls out from the next room, unaware of the conversation. Before rejoining the table, Margot names a window for later: tomorrow, during book club, seven to ten.
