A birthday cake waiting for its candles sits at the center of the weekend when the stepbrother comes home. Alma, his stepsister, has just turned 21 and wants everyone to treat her as a grown woman. Their parents assign the two of them a shared bathroom and one rule: doors closed. Her mother is pleased with her. Her father mostly winces. The stepbrother wants a quiet visit. Alma has written a list of what she wants now, and he is at the top.
