A phone call from Singapore interrupts the poolside afternoon: the boss wants to know whether his wife is alone. Nate, hired for five thousand dollars to watch Lucy for the seven days her husband is away, tells him she is by the pool. Lucy finds the fee insulting, since her husband once spent the same on her birthday. She changed into a red swimsuit the moment his car left. The boss calls every night at ten, and Lucy wants Nate to have a story ready for those calls.

The boss calls to check on Lucy and praises Nate for keeping watch. Lucy jokes about her price, tells Nate to say she is being good, and asks him to come upstairs. A second call changes the plan: the boss wants Nate to spend the night at the house, since his wife is frightened alone after dark. She tells him to skip the guest room.
